Service Date vs Invoice Date: What to Show
Understand the difference between service date and invoice date, when to show a service period, and how both dates relate to the payment due date.
Short answer
The service date shows when goods were supplied or work was performed. The invoice date, also called the issue date, shows when the seller created and sent the payment request. The due date shows when payment must arrive. These dates can be the same, but each serves a different record-keeping purpose.

The three dates explained
Service date
The service date identifies when a specific service occurred. For work completed across several days or a recurring month, use a service period with a start and end date.
Invoice date
The invoice date identifies when the invoice was issued. It supports invoice numbering, accounts receivable records, customer processing, and due-date calculations.
Payment due date
The due date is the payment deadline. It may be calculated from the invoice date or another agreed event. State an exact date when possible to reduce ambiguity.
See invoice due date calculations for Net 7, Net 15, and Net 30 examples.
Practical date example
Suppose a consultant completes a project on August 28 and issues the invoice on September 2 with Net 15 terms:
- Service date: August 28.
- Invoice date: September 2.
- Payment terms: Net 15 from the invoice date.
- Due date: September 17.
The invoice should not replace the August 28 service date with September 2 merely because that is when billing occurred.
When to use a service period
A service period is useful for recurring or multi-day work, including:
- Monthly bookkeeping from August 1 to August 31.
- Weekly cleaning services from August 24 to August 30.
- Consulting work completed across several project dates.
- Subscription access for a stated billing period.
- Construction or agency work covered by a milestone period.
Place the service period in the invoice header, project reference, or relevant line-item descriptions.
Can the invoice date be later than the service date?
Yes. Businesses often issue an invoice after completing work or at the end of a billing cycle. Send it promptly so the customer receives the full agreed payment period and both parties can reconcile the transaction.
Do not backdate an invoice to hide a delay or change the customer's payment period. If an issued date is wrong, use a traceable correction process.
Tax and accounting considerations
Service, supply, invoice, and tax-point rules vary by location and transaction. The date used for tax reporting may not always be determined only by the invoice heading. Keep the actual transaction dates and consult appropriate professional guidance when required.

Pre-send checklist
- Invoice date matches the actual issue date.
- Service date or service period matches the work record.
- Due date follows the customer agreement.
- Line-item dates match timesheets, delivery records, or milestones.
- Invoice number remains unique and sequential under the chosen system.
- Tax and accounting dates follow applicable requirements.
- A corrected invoice preserves the original audit trail.

FAQs
Is the service date the same as the invoice date?
Not necessarily. The service date records when work occurred, while the invoice date records when the payment request was issued.
Which date starts Net 30?
Use the event stated in the agreement. Net 30 often runs from the invoice date, but the exact terms should be written clearly.
What if services cover the whole month?
Show a service period with start and end dates, such as August 1-31, rather than choosing one arbitrary service date.
Can I change an invoice date after sending it?
Do not silently overwrite an issued invoice. Use a traceable correction process and retain the original record when a date needs to be fixed.
